Agua Salsa Festival
Thessaloniki, Greece
Five years old, with 650 dancers from 28 countries and the first Timba en el Ring qualifier ever held in Greece.
Agua Salsa Festival has grown to around 650 dancers from 28 countries, with more than forty workshops and five parties, one of them on a boat. That is large enough to feel international and small enough that the organisers talk about it as a family rather than a congress.
The thing worth knowing about the fifth edition is the ring. Timba en el Ring comes to Greece for the first time, with couples and solo categories judged on the Saturday afternoon. The winners qualify directly for the Grand Final and take a full pass to TMF Barcelona 2027 with accommodation included, which turns a weekend in Thessaloniki into a route somewhere else.
José Luis Vivar, who directs Timbeando in Lloret de Mar, gives a special workshop. Bojana y Pedja of Tocoloro in Belgrade return for the Afro-Cuban side, and the socials draw crews from as far as London.
The billing is Cuban salsa and Afro-Cuban rhythms with, in the organisers' own words, a touch of bachata. That ordering is accurate: this is Cuban-led rather than an SBK weekend with a Cuban room.
The venue is the old municipal slaughterhouse, built in 1896, closed in 1988 and now a protected monument turned cultural space by the port. Industrial, high-ceilinged and partly open-air, which is a long way from a hotel ballroom.
